So Long, Too Long

Wow, So much has happened since the last post. Will summarized them in shortest possible so at least I still have a memory of what happened in future. 

1. Tendered my resignation.

I toyed with the idea of changing job for a long time but was too scared to take the leap of faith. For a long time I wasn't able to bid goodbye to my comfort zone. I also love the people I work with - many of whom I still keep close in touch. But alas, I realized it took a toll of my life. I was losing too much of the good things life offers. My relationship too suffered as I often come home frustrated with work. He too wasn't in a better position than mine - being a manager in Malaysia's biggest fitness chain with a lot of  responsibilities in hand. Quarreling became our daily routine. Discussions and endless late night talks, we finally decided to man up (woman up in my case. heh!) and typed our "love letter". It was a crazy decision to be both resigning together but one that we have no regrets. We've grown so much as a couple and I can never imagine having someone else other than him as my other half. 

2. Moved back to Kuching for good

This was another difficult decision I had to make last year. A lot of people were surprised with the bold move I made, myself too. I knew very much that Klang Valley wasn't a place I wanted to grow old but I loved the vibrant city life. But living cost were sky rocket high and even with me earning quite a substantial amount for my age, I couldn't save at all. Worse is, people don't actually get the quality of life they deserved. It wasn't worth it anymore to be leaving home. The grass isn't greener here. I also realized that my parents aren't getting any younger and I want to be able to give back to them while I had the chance. My mum and her friends jokingly mentioned how kids nowadays only come back for funerals. It was a joke but sadly, also the truth. There were a lot of sacrifice I had to make with privacy taking the crown. Moving to Kuching also meant me living with my parents, with them invading my privacy that I had enjoyed thoroughly for a good seven years.I have to admit the first month was difficult as hell. I love my privacy truly,madly,deeply and having to follow to house rules was not something I favor. Glad to inform I am now doing well adapting though. ;) 

3. Fitness

Sports has always been a huge part of my life but this time I fell in love with it. And I find myself always striving to be better in everything fitness. A lot for me to learn still but I'm loving every bit of it! 

4. FitPacks

This was a brainchild of mine and the other half. It wasn't something we did not to earn big bucks but we saw how bad obesity in Malaysia is and we wanted to help and do our part. We wanted to let people know the importance of eating healthy and how fun it can be. Of course we also notice the booming fitness presence in Kuching and jumped at the opportunity. Demand was overwhelming and we actually had to stop orders from coming in! We were so blessed for the many support we received especially when we both do not have much friends in Kuching. I guess when you're doing something genuinely out of passion, success would be within grabs. :)

5. Fitter than ever

Food has always been my passion but unfortunately I wasn't blessed with a good metabolism. Saw too, struggled with weight all his life. So when we both struggled with work, we find love and comfort in food. Didn't take us long to balloon up and I was at the heaviest of my life. I couldn't wear most of my clothes and ended up turning to office with always the same clothing. Sucks. I had always thought losing weight were about starving yourself so I dreaded the process. Saw being the experienced and certified one, showed and guided me to losing weight the correct way. We revamped our fridge and hit the gym together. Through this continuous healthy living I was able to fit back into my old clothes - some of which I could not even put my legs into for a year! Of course this isn't my final destination, this will be a lifestyle for us. 

6. Near death experience

I have been in accidents before but nothing really major happened until this particular one. I was on the way back from a Sibu road trip. We were wide awake having just stopped for a break. A car overtooked another car from an opposite direction and didn't make it in time so we had to avoid that particular car. We lose control as the road were very slippery from the big pool of yellow mud, swift to the left and flew into someone's house. I was calm the entire time but recalling it I'll have to say it was nerve wrecking. It was also funny because we were stuck in a very dark kampung middle of the night and had to take bus back to Kuching. We were very thankful to have met nice people who helped us all the way because obviously we knew no one there! Many also commented -we were lucky to be alive. Apparently it was one of the "dirty spots" and the villagers told us at least one accident happen every month - it is always fatal. The next few days after our accident, another three accidents happen - all dead. I thank God for giving me another chance to live. Must have been one of the little good deeds I've done. :) 

I'm grateful for each and everything that has happened. I've learned so much and am constantly still learning and searching the best way to live life.

Milwaukee Steak House

On a normal eat-out day, I try to avoid western restaurants most of the time. I always find their portion to be too big, other times it didn't taste close to Western and most of the time extremely overpriced. Maybe I had not earn enough to eat a plate of steak that cost RM 50 or much, much more.

One day though, after a frustrating day at work I was craving for Western food but did not want to splurge too much. I remembered seeing a number of my Facebook friends checking in this place and decided to try it out.

The lamb chop were somewhat impressive. I asked for it to be medium well and it came just that. I also like that it came with shitake mushroom, corn, rocket leaves and strawberry. Quite an interesting combination and something other places might not have come up with.

The spring chicken were nicely prepared - it was tender and juicy. Only complaint was that I find the taste too oriental for my liking. But at RM 19.90, this chick is definitely a catch! 

We also ordered oxtail soup to share. Very generous portion of beef and it tasted quite flavoursome but it fail to taste fresh. I felt like the soup might have been kept for a tad too long in the fridge. I was quite surprised to find out that for such a heavy soup it did not come a long with any toasted baguette.

The total bill only costed us RM 80++ and I thought it was pretty reasonable for the portion and quality of food we are getting. This is the first visit and I'll definitely visit again when the Angmoh craving kicks in. :)

The Color Hotel, Hatyai Thailand

Unlike Bangkok, there's really not much options of hotels too choose from here. It was a quite an impromptu trip (decided a day before!) and we didn't do much survey on hotels. We just wanted a decent hotel that's not too expensive, yet not dodgy and old. We decided on The Colors mainly due to the fact that it was a new hotel. You can't really go wrong with a new hotel.

We booked a deluxe for two nights, priced at approximately RM120 per night inclusive of tax. While it wasn't so expensive in figures, it is one of the pricier hotel in Hatyai. Hotels in average are priced below RM 100 for standard rooms and the only one I came across charging more was the chain by Novotel.

The design of the room were quite minimalist, very plain and basic. I'm no designer so no issues on that. However there are two things I find very disturbing. The switches were placed in the middle of the head board. It is extremely irritating when you constantly accidentally switch off/on the lights and tv.

Second to that was the non existence sound proofing. Our neighbours were so noisy that we had a hard time sleeping! It was a good thing they checked out the next day. I also didn't agree why the dining table had to be placed in the middle of the room, underneath the LCD.

The pros of the hotel would be the size of the room. It's fairly spacious for two person and the king size bed was pretty comfortable for two person to roll around. The impressive speed WiFi is provided without surcharge. Tv too had comprehensive channels.

For a 3 star hotel, I find it unacceptable that they didn't had a kettle in the room. I don't mind if tea and coffee is not provided but kettle I find is a basic for graded hotels. There's also no restaurant in the hotel so the price charged comes with no breakfast.

I wouldn't complained much on the cleanliness of the room - it was clean. But bare in my mind that you have to keep your own room clean throughout the stay because there won't be any housekeeping. No one came to clean my room, my rubbish were stacked up. I had to request for the finished toiletries and the complimentary drinking water.

Will I return? Nay, I don't think so. Even in terms of location they failed. They are located centrally, just about 10 minutes walk to Lee Garden but in order to get out to the main road, you'll need to go through an alley which I find it pretty unsafe to walk at night.

Kocik Kitchen Nyonya Restaurant

Malacca is easily one of my favorite state and I visit the state as much as I fly back to my hometown. Good food are abundance and it's considered a "cheap getaway" when you're just too tired of living in KL. My first date with le boyfriend was also here so we try to come back here as much as we could just to spend some quality time together. I'm actually typing this from my hotel room in Malacca. We're currently staying in this nice new boutique hotel that is quite far from the town. :) 

Kocik Restaurant was a place we stumbled upon when our Plan A did not work. Our initial plan was to dine in Peranakan Restaurant right opposite but upon entering, the waitress literally shoo-ed us away and repeatedly say "it's full, it's full" even though there are quite a few empty tables - granted they may have been reserved. I'm very pantang with bad service like this and we weren't even given the option to you know, wait for available table. Hmph. 

The owner here was a very nice lady and I felt she needed us as a customer much more than the other ahem, famous restaurant need us. We felt welcomed as she took the time to explain to us the dishes despite the restaurant being full on that day. The place too felt more like a home rather than a restaurant.

I had always wanted to try the "Ayam Buah Keluak" and finally had the chance to have it here. Apparently we are suppose to scrape the candle nut with the small spoon provided and mixed it with white rice.  Taste very much like fermented black bean but much more palatable. Goes really well with white rice. While the nut appears to be very flavorful I find it weird that the chicken do not carry the strong flavor of the nut. I still really like the dish though. The nut is addictive! 

We also ordered fried bee hoon to share since we didn't want to have too much rice. It was nice, edible but really nothing to shout about. You can give this a pass. 

Otak Otak here taste very different from what we normally have. The strong turmeric taste is absent and with its bouncy texture I find that it resembles a lot like fish ball instead. Worth trying though I think I still prefer the conventional otak-otak.

A typical Nyonya meal would not be complete if a good bowl of chendol is not included. They are really generous with cocounut milk but I prefer mine to be less rich and more of the gula melaka instead. I still find Donald and Lily's chendol to be the best thus far. 

There's a lot Nyonya Restaurant around in Malacca and going through all the positive reviews in Trip Advisor I would say this is one of the 'safe' restaurant to dine in if you're in the state and looking for authentic Nyonya food. I would definitely return to try the rest of their menu!

Sungai Besi Wantan Mee

... a.k.a the only wantan mee that I will eat. I come from the land of kolo mee and my taste bud have refused to give in to another similar egg noodle but this is the only place I give an exception. The place only opens after 6.30 pm and is open until as late as 3 a.m. The next morning the same place transform to a workshop.

The place basically serve only one type of noodle but you have a number choices of sides to come along with it. Ranging from almost all things pork - char siew, vinegar pork leg, hakka stew pork and a few other pork dishes. The two chicken dish would be the braised chicken feet and curry chicken.

I think one of the reason why I would eat the wantan mee here is the fact that the noodles is not overly drowned in dark soy sauce (still look yellow!), instead it was the pork lard used that made most of the taste in whole.  The texture also is almost identical to kolo mee, more "kiu" and less the egg flavor. 

The curry wildboar here is remarkable. It's rich but not overly thick and is spicy enough to give the oomph! I polished this plate clean including the gravy. hehe. I only wish the meat could have been less lean. If there is one thing you must not missed here then it is the curry wildboar!

The sui kow or wantan soup is also worth to try if you wanted a side dish. They are pretty generous with the filling of the dumplings and I find the clear soup to be flavorful. 

Everything pictured cost us RM 23.50. Pretty reasonable by KL standard and food quality is guaranteed. If you've never heard of this place, here's the coordinate for you :

The Roots Eco Resort Ipoh

"Nestled in the curve of Kinta Valley and is Ipoh's best secret " is their tagline and they have managed to live up to it. This is indeed Ipoh's best kept secret. 

We were initially put off with the fact that the location is in Tanjung Rambutan and with so little reviews , we were quite skeptical. It was a last minute plan for Valentine's and most places do not have rooms anymore. I guess it was a blessing in disguise that most places are fully booked as this place is truly a gem. 

We had booked two different room for two nights as they are fully booked. The first night we stayed at the Orchard Villa Deluxe. I felt like it was architectured perfectly for couples. The bed, the outdoor bath room and most of all the Jacuzzi! To have it outdoor right smack in a natural surrounding was mentally soothing. We spent the night soaking inside, drinking beers and repeated the same the next morning after breakfast. 

The second room we had was a room with 6 single beds and located a tad too near from the reception.  As we're just a company of two, 6 beds is obviously too much and we really wanted some privacy so we requested to change to other room. It was full house and left with no choice, they gave us the Tree House. It was really built on a tree!

It was much more private but it was located too near from the road making sleeping almost impossible. So if you're planning on a trip here then I would suggest you to book early so you'll be able to choose the rooms that suits your needs best. We appreciated the effort in accommodating our request nonetheless. 

I believe you can actually swim in the river but it seems quite deep and since I can't swim I reckon it would not be too safe for me. And if the river is not for you then there's also the "modern river" to swim in. For those who can't swim like me, you can always hang out at the deck chairs or at the gazebo if your entourage/partner prefers the river.

We requested to use the BBQ pit on the first night and thought it was going to be a private one just outside our room but they had it in the main lounge which we didn't really appreciate. As it is a public pit, it is totally understandable that pork is not allowed but we wished we could have been told prior to the stay. We had brought some marinated pork belly and we had to throw it away :(  

To be honest I had no expectations when we ordered the food - We just wanted to have the pit free as they will charge unless you order a certain amount of food from them.  It was all good as the potato salad and fried rice was the bomb. It was nothing like any of what I have tasted, very delicious. Marinated meat too was good.

Breakfast is provided but because the resort does not expect hundreds of guests at once, the choices are not as much as what your 5 star hotel would but I can give an assurance is that they are damn good, The Nasi Lemak I had was the best I had in a long, long time! 

Marketing has been kept minimal and I believed many customers are here based on word of mouth from happy guests and I hope it is kept this way - "Ipoh's secret". I would not want a beautiful place like this to be exploited in the name of greed. 

That said, with me writing a lengthy positive review bare in my mind that this is not the place for everyone. If you just want to find peace and tranquility just by doing nothing at all faraway from the city, then this would be the perfect place for you.  In my book that is what holiday is supposed to be and that's the reason why I really enjoyed the place.

Thank You The Roots for making the getaway an awesome one.  Looking forward my next stay! 

The Lunch Lady, Ho Chi Minh

When I travel, food come to my utmost priority and it is a blessing that my partner shares the same rule of thumb.  As this was a very impromptu visit, we did almost nil research and only start googling when we checked in the hotel. Ho Chi Minh itself is a small city and we were staying in the central of everything so initially we didn't really felt the need to google for food. It was only on the second day that our taste bud were continously disappointed by the tasteless food of the streets that we decided to start looking.

The boyfriend found The Lunch Lady and quoted that she served the meanest bowl of noodle. The Lunch Lady was just another street vendor back then until in 2008, she was featured by Anthony Bourdain in his show No Reservation. The location is rather secluded, under a shade of a huge trunk of tree - almost in the middle of nowhere. The only way for you to get there would be by cab.

Apparently her menu varies depending on what she can get from the market at that particular day. The day I was there seems to be this bowl of beef noodle in a slightly spicy broth with a sweet after taste. I don't know what it is in Vietnamese though. Language is a huge barrier here and ordering food requires a lot of your talent in sign language if you're not local.

It is quite a big portion but based on what I read online, portions for tourist is slightly bigger - with extra dongs of course. It tasted very home cooked and fresh. I wish it was much more spicicer but the home made fish cake was the bomb. I also really liked the two cuts of beef. I get why it is featured on the tv - with very little choices of delicious food this is indeed the best food in Vietnam but definitely not the tastiest food I savored.

The spring rolls seems to be a hit in most tables and we ordered a portion too.It came accompanied with a bowl thick sweet sauce with peanuts and cut chilies. I didn't really enjoy this national dish of Vietnam. It was too green for a carnivorous like me.

Almost every nooks of streets and corners of Vietnam, you'll get people serving coffee. I had an average of 8 cups per day and while most places serve the coffee half empty, this place serve it almost full. Coffee tasted like any other place of in Saigon, thick and buttery. Very addictive.

So if you're in Ho Chi Minh and wants to give the lady a visit, it is located at : 23 Hoong Sa St., District 1.  

Try to get the bell boy to write the address in Vietnamese every time you're heading out by cab, save hell lots of time! 

The Boathouse ttDi

This place is nestled in the famous row of restaurants in ttDi and have been around for business for years now. I've read a lot of positive reviews of the place and one day the boyF just decided to be all sweet and brought me here. We don't do the "romantic" dates often so when we have it once in a blue moon, it's nice to just embrace the moment. 

To be honest, I never like places like this cause the food normally looked very presentable to the eyes, but very unsatisfying to the taste buds. The boathouse proves my assumption wrong for one of the many rare occasions.

We had the Buffalo Wing as our appetizer. It was captioned very well in the menu and I just had to order this. Good choice tho, turns out to be one of the best wings I had and tasted good without the dipping. I wish  the portion was bigger. hehe

The oysters with caviar and caper buds were awesomely fresh. As jakun as this may sound, this was my virgin taste of oysters. I never dared to try, fearing that it might taste awfully fishy. It taste surprisingly good, nothing fishy of sort and so fresh. I don't know if this is cause they are good but thanks to them I had such a good 'first time' and now I can go around buffets slurping oysters.

This was one of the best dish of the night. Who would have thought that pork would go so well with a fruit.  The oh-so-tender smoked pork literally just melt in your mouth and eating it together with the caramelized pineapple sauce was just perfect. It was a dish that i'll say weirdly delicious. The chef is a total genius!

And what's a dinner without desert ? They had quite limited choice and I was in the mood for something chocolate so I ordered this. It was mediocre, edible but not something I would made a repeat order if I ever do visit again. Tasted like it was kept in the fridge for a while.

I'm not very much of a drinker so I would not be able to judge how a good cocktail should taste. Ordered this cause it looked glam and it tasted alright. The boyf had the mojito and it was quite neat too.  

When you're paying quite a bit for the food, I believe it is worthwhile to comment about the service too. I like that they are very swift in serving but I didn't like the fact that the wait staff consists more of non-locals. Not trying to discriminate but they didn't speak too well in English, at least not the one that was serving us. 

Overall if you asked me if I'll have a second visit, I'll go with a definite yes.
