New Lane, Penang

If you're coming to Penang for a short trip and do not have ample of time in hands, New Lane is the one place you can visit to savor all the good food the island offers. It basically has everything Penang is famous for in one street!

Patrons here consist of mainly tourist, or locals hosting tourists and such. It's a common thing to sight people with cameras snapping the food, the people and the place.

Even with so many stalls in one lane, business are generally good for all the vendors. Just look at the amount of eggs this particular stalls used! However, as the tables are limited by numbers, getting a table during the weekends can be a tedious task.

Fried chicken skin is something I've just started to be accustomed to eating. I've seen this on sale in many places in Penang but because I don't take chicken skin (not for health reasons, I just don't like it) it never occur to me that it could taste so good on its own! It's perfectly fried to crisp so you don't get the oil from the chicken skin squirting out. It's really, really good! :D

My friend also ordered fried tofu from the same stall he ordered fried chicken skin. Both friends gave thumbs up for it but i wouldn't be able to comment on that. Tofu.. errr , doesn't appear in my food dictionary. :P

I love pork coagulated blood and the vendors here are very generous with the portion! :D For only RM4 a bowl, I can have more than 10 pieces of that gem! *feeling vampire-ish* :p Taste wise, I find curry mee taste similar in most places. It's also not something you can finish by yourself if you plan to order a lot of dishes as the soup tend to be really rich and fills you up.

It took me more than 10 visits to Penang before I finally tried char koay kak - and I didn't like it. It's more or less like the Kuching version of char kueh but tasted very differently. It was in between salty and spicy with a sweet after taste. Apologies to char koay kak fans, I find it a little too confusing for my taste bud. hehe.

My weird friend ordered wantan mee in a place that has so many better food choice. Lol. I didn't try though, cause I don't really like the taste of egg noodles - hence making wantan mee my least favourite food to eat.

Satay in my opinion is not the forte of Penangites. I've had it a couple of times and non of it is remarkable. This particular one here is supposed to be pork satay but taste a lot more like chicken.

Guleng Peng! I don't know if this drink is a specialty in Penang but i first had it in Penang and love it! It's the Chinese version of air bandung and instead of using rose syrup, they used grenadine. Absolutely refreshing!

The vendors only operates at night. During day time though, there's a coffeeshop right beside this lane that has excellent fried pork intestine porridge - supposedly famous also.

Word of Advice : According to locals, this place has got very high snatch thief cases, so becareful with your belongings when you're there kay?

Holland Fries

Jess told me she had been wanting to try this place for quite some time and i agreed to accompany her. So, after six hours of shopping, we got tired and i suggested that we take a short break and came here. Holland fries is a place where you can have the normal fries along with funky toppings.

I was quite excited even with the emptiness of the shop since i've been wanting to try something similar for quite some time. I just didn't know the place existed.

I guess their main market is for take aways since there's only four chairs.

They actually had many varieties of toppings on the menu but on the day we went , only three out of the many are available. Kinda disappointed :( Price range are from RM 3.90 to RM 5.90.

I cant remember the names actually but this is what i had ;

This is actually tomato based sauce with basil leaves and italian seasoning, kinda like bolognese. It tasted alright, but a bit too watery.

This is sour cream one. I know what you are thinking! The cream looks wrong right ? (If it rings no bell to you, the sour cream looks like something that comes from the other end of you ;p ) I did noticed it when it was served but i didn't wanna spoil Jess' mood since she paid for it. Hehe. Sour cream wasn't sour. :(

The only credit to this shop is that, they used imported fries. Imported fries are usually better because hey, Americans are good in fast food and usually their fries tastes better, bigger and less healthy ;p

Holland Fries is located at Queensbay Mall, right at the side of the cineplex. It will be good to eat with at the movies rather than the boring popcorn ;p Don't say i recommend one though. Hehe.

Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks

Taiwan Street Snacks has been gaining popularity among Malaysians and you can get Taiwan Street Snacks from high-end shopping malls to your weekly Pasar Malam.

I was at Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks in One Utama for lunch and i must admit it tested my patience when i went there with an empty stomach. I ordered my drinks first and when i finish, it's still not my turn yet.

The place is really small and only had about five chairs and a sofa for waiting, and had this dine-and-go concept. There's also only one waiter serving but service was efficient.

Oyster Mee Sua RM 6

This has been gaining huge popularity in Taiwan. The mee sua is cooked in this thick gravy but it's not the kind of thickness where you feel giddy after eating. It is just the right thickness and served really hot. Portion was pretty small but rather filling.

XXL Crispy Chicken RM 6

This one is really a huge piece.About 9 inches. It tasted good flavour-wise but it was a tad dry for my liking. Plus the fact that i was sharing with my friends and they do not cut the chicken for customers made the whole eating process a lot more difficult.

V-Soy RM 2.50

There is only two drinks there. Either you choose V-Soy or mineral water. I was here before the whole Melamine thing was announced but now that it is announced, V-soy is part of the list. I passed their Penang Branch recently and saw they are still serving V-Soy. Maybe the list is wrong or they just didn't care. ;p

I would recommend this place if you're into experiencing new things because they are not like any other restaurants. Hey, we need changes once in a while so why not ? ;p

Pasar Malam Cheras

Word has it that, this is the longest night market in Malaysia. A lot of tv stations filmed the place too.

Despite the fact that it has a lot of vendors, there isn't much varieties. Most of them sell the same thing but at a distance with each other.

Everything looks quite tempting and i ended buying more than enough for myself.

Spicy Pork Meat Balls RM 2

It tasted more tom yam-ish rather than spicy. But the balls were tangy :P

Taiwan Sausage RM 1.60

There are a lot of stalls selling this. Some are fried while the rest is grilled. I chose the grilled and opt for the spicy one. A number of "flavours" are available - wasabi, black pepper, mayonaise and original.

China Burger RM 1.20

This tasted quite bad. It's actually a batter-like bottom filled with minced meat and topped with an egg. I find it quite tasteless.

Har Kau RM 3

They have a few choices instead of the normal prawn one and i chose the Yam and pork one. The skin is nice but the filling is just alright.

Uncle Bob Chicken RM 5

There are many vendors selling the fried crispy Chicken (a popular Taiwanese street snack) but some are using breast meat while Uncle Bob uses drums. So , it's more worth it.

Egg Cake RM 0.60

I bought it because it is Doraemon! Hehe. But taste pretty bad :P Good to cheat kids. Hehe.

If you wish to visit the night market, you can take a train from KL Sentral to Bandar Tasik Selatan and take the Rapid KL. Go down at the jejantas in front of McDonalds. It is only on Wednesday night. :)

Ah Pek Stall

Just right opposite Ala Carte ( or better known as Star Cineplex ) stood a humble stall run by a happy family. They have been there for decades!

There's nothing much to choose besides : fried fish balls (homemade), fried chicken ( drums, wings and the ass)

The infamous chicken ass

I eat chicken ass ( yes , i do! it beautifies the skin complexion ok! ) but i'm extremely choosy of the asses for hygienic purposes ;p The chicken ass is marinated with the same ingredient as the fried chicken so it tasted the same.

The famous fish balls

It's really cheap coz it's only RM 1 per stick and that's 6 balls! The fish balls are tangy when it's hot but when you leave it for a few hours it gets rather rubber-ish.

Closer shot of the balls!

I believe there is one main reason that people keep coming back : the DAMN GOOD chilli sauce!

The chilli sauce is probably the best i've tasted so far in my entire life!

They don't open on a specific time but they're usually there by 4.45 P.M ;p Trust me, it's damn good!

Lok Lok

Lok Lok has always been my all time favourite hawker dish. I still remember when i was really young , i can have around 20 sticks of the road side lok-lok in Bukit Bintang,KL. Well, that was back then when weight doesn't really matter and fat was cute ! Hrmph!

In Kuching , there's not really much place for Lok Lok tho'. Most of them are the fried ones in coffee shop. The only one i know that is the boil-kind is this one situated at this very old-school dangdut place.

Wide Varieties for you to choose...

They have fried stuffs too But i think it is always over-fried and dry. So go for the boiled one yea..

My lok lok :P

Ordered so much .. in the end Stef ate like a quarter of it only! I had to finish them up !

Their Chili is to die for. So damn good.

They served their 'liang tea' in this metal bowl .. which i find it rather special. Hehe.

They also have noodles and their nasi lemak is pretty popular. ( It's not nice to me tho'. ) If you wanna go there, call me yea! I'll be most happy to tag along! heheh!

Supper is Super

I didn't go to anywhere special recently besides going for supper with Hua Beng.

I had always enjoy supper. It's very casual and relax. You talk about just anything with friends you're very comfortable with and the later the supper is , the better it is. Not to late though , coz you don't want to listen to the mum.fm the moment you enter the house. ;p

What's good for supper?

Lok Lok

Fried stuff are always good even though they're sinful.

Satay

Pork satay to be precise. heheheh!

Picture below is what me, Beng and Zacq had today for our supper! Each of us had two glass of teh c peng!

I love it when you order food that you can share along with your friends. You create a bond there. I would prefer supper in a small group tho'. =D

So , anyone wanna ask me out for supper? hehe

Hui Sing Hawker Centre

I do think this post might make those who currently in overseas (STEF AND BENG) drool and wet their computer.. Or maybe they might kill me for writing this post! Hahaha!

Anyway , this post is actually dedicated to two of my dear friends , Stef and Hua Beng , with the help of Jess who accompany me eat.. She didn't pay for me tho. LOL

This place is rather Nostalgic to me ,cause i stay kinda nearby here.. so i practically grew up eating dinner here. A place that is very much part of me. I tasted every single stall before ... and knew pretty much about the sellers background. Jess was saying.. "EH! why u noe so much bout them wan!??!"

Cha kueh

For Stef! The cha kueh in Hui Sing not nice wan lah.. Tasteless.. No wonder nobody order(except Jess). LOL!! But i also know this is Stef's Fav!

Kolo Bee hoon

For Beng! I'm not very much a fan of kolo bee hoon , but i know Hua Beng miss this a lot ...so yea, i ate it. It's from my fav stall. the last 3rd stall from the right. Nice! :)

Cha Kueh Tiaw

This one is from the left side of Amachi(The indian food stall). I used to eat the Palm Road one since i was young, but recently i find out this one taste better. But portion is RIDICULOUSLY LITTLE!

White Lady

I think i should call this the almighty white lady. It's everyone's favourite! Many prefer to order from the stall at the end but i personally think the one near the Palm road 's Cha kueh tiau one is much nicer. For those of you who has no idea what is white lady.. It is actually mango syrup + ideal milk + pineapple + longan and crushed ice :)

ABC Special

I think they have the cheapest ABC in the whole Kuching! Nice and colourful! Of course, this is from my favourite stall also! :)

Cincau Peng

This is a weird drink Jess like. Hahaha! It's cincau + sarsi syrup + ideal milk. Shud be nice. LOL.

I'll say Hui Sing is one of the best hawker centre in Kuching. They have around 20 stalls and each have their own specialities. I'm sure they can please every one's taste buds! Pop by there if you're so out of place to eat.. or you can call me to accompany you! :)

Stef and Hua Beng , i hope this made your day! Miss hanging out with you guys here! lots of love ,<3 from me !
