Warung Santai, Tesco Ampang

Warung Santai is by no where close to any luxury restaurants but it is a place I frequent a lot for dinners. Of course, that was when I was still under my one month training. Now that i'm officially working, I can't remember when was the last time I actually had my dinner during a weekday.

Warung Santai serve normal Malay food. The kind of "masakan panas" stalls food that you can find anywhere in Klang Valley. The taste of the food tho' is a notch higher and since it's inside Tesco, it's air conditioned.

One of the dish that I order every single visit is their Tom Yam campur. I'm very particular about how Tom Yam should taste and if I sense it's straight from the bottled paste you get in hypermarkets, I won't eat anymore. The one here taste nothing like that and I like how the level of spicyness and sourness tally.

Call us weird, but telur dadar is one of the things we order in every visit. It's not that the omelets are different from any other place, it's just that these are the "normal food" to go with rice. I don't take them tho' cause omelets prepared any other place other than the back of my kitchen are usually drenched in oil. Not trying to be bimbo but just imagining the oil going through my esophagus always makes me giddy. Lol.

On days where we finish work slightly earlier - by that I meant 8pm, we usually go for "full monte" dinner. That's when we order dishes we don't normally order like the udang masak petai. It's surprisingly good and I'm extremely fussy when it comes to seafood. Their prawns are not fresh water prawns and that's a huge plus! The petai is also prepared well that it does not give that unpleasant after taste.

If you're into food from the family of Nemo, their Ikan Masak Pedas is worth trying too. There's a variety of fishes to choose from but remembering the names of fishes is something i'm still working on. hahaha. Heck, I can't even remember the name of the fish we chose. lol. The only complaint on the fish is that it is over fried, otherwise it's really not bad.

The only dish I don't recommend ordering is the Kerabu Mangga. But that's only because I didn't like the way it is prepared. I like kerabu to be prepared the Thai way, and the one they have here is the local way of preparing it. I find it a little tasteless and I don't like the fried anchovies. :P

Of course, never forget about your obligation to vegetables. lol. I usually go for Kai Lan Ikan Masin. It's well, errr, edible? Sorry, going on and on about vegetables is not my forte. Lol.

Moving on to the beverages. I usually go for teh o kosong but on days where I feel like going out the norm, I would go for their ais kacang. Not trying to be bias, but I personally prefer ais kacang prepared by Chinese. However the one they have here is worth trying and for less than RM 4, it's worth every penny.

They also have this special in-house drink that is served in an interesting sight. I cant remember the exact name for this drink but it's pictured in the menu so you would know which to order if you do dine there. It's a concoction of sprite, lime and cherry jellies Very refreshing.

Or if you really want the whole Malay food affair, pair your meals with air bandung. Not something I would drink everyday but hey, having something sweet once in a while won't hurt right? :)

Oh yeah, I'm pretty "well-known" there among the staffs as the first time I was there, I asked for so much chili and when the waitress asked me if it's spicy, i told her "not at all." The chefs were surprised how a Chinese like me could take spicy food so well that he personally walk out of the kitchen and ever since then I seem to be getting better service. So don't be jealous if you see me getting better treatment when you're there. :D

Nyonya Colors - The Gardens Mid Valley

The patronizing of this restaurant was very impromptu. I was famished by the time I reached Mid Valley and Nyonya Colors happened to be right in front of me, so I walked in.

I find the combination of marble tables with the beautifully drawn wooden stool to be very unique. Love the classic flowers on the chairs!

The menu is nothing much to shout about. They offer mainly local affairs - nasi lemak, fried beehoon and the likes. Instead of opting for nasi lemak, I decided to choose something different and went for the Nasi Kunyit with Chicken Curry.

It was my first time eating glutinous rice cooked like this and I thought the turmeric glutinous rice tasted fine. But the chicken curry was too creamy/milky for my liking. It felt like I was eating chicken cooked in curry flavored milk!

My stomach (mind, body and soul if I may add.lol) doesn't go very well with food that are too creamy and milky. I left almost half of it untouched and even so, I still feel quite sick after that.

I am not so much a fan of kuih-s but i thought they looked very inviting at the counter top so I ordered the talam, lapis beras and red bean to try. They all tasted the same - or maybe because my taste bud was already malfunction by then as I was already feeling very giddy from the horrifying bowl of curry.

What makes matters worse was the teh ais I ordered came extremely sweet. I took only few sips and decided it was too sweet for any human consumption and left it.

The restaurant really made me felt like I just paid RM 14.30 to make myself miserable. Lol.

On a happier note, I'm going for a short therapy!

Exactly a year ago, I was here also here (the hotel, not Penang) for the same reason! Good to be back again. Unlike Nyonya Colors, TuneHotels comes highly recommended from me :P

Now, please excuse me ... as I rejuvenate with beers and pizza on the bed! (and breathe in air cond!) <3

Nasi Lemak

Before I came back to uni, I managed to ask my mother to cook me nasi lemak. It was quite impromptu. I just happen to be in the kitchen, open the fridge, and said, " Hey Mom, let's cook nasi lemak tomorrow.".

Sambal

A good sambal is when your tastebud is able to detect the spicyness, saltiness, aromatic belachan, a hint of sweetness and most of all it is not watery.

Cucumber

Anchovies

Peanut

Boiled Egg

There's also the coconut rice but i forget to take a picture of it. :P

... and there you go, a plate of Nasi Lemak.

Call me conservative, but I like my Nasi Lemak this way. No extras.

P/s : Sorry for the lack of updates. Kinda busy with mid-sem examinations.

Oh yeah, Happy Valentine's Day! <3

Nasi Lemak Famous

"Nasi Lemak Famous" is located at the right end of the open air food court in front of Bangsar Village. Strangely enough another famous nasi lemak - "Nasi Lemak Ganja" is located at the other end. I was meaning to try the Nasi Lemak Ganja but they're not open so i settled with this one.

The sambal was good and has the ooomph but it is not the best i've tasted. While the cuttle fish was cook to perfection. It would be A+ if the spicyness is doubled. ;p

My sister opted for the chicken- which i should have! The chicken was to die for! Man, i don't know they made the chicken so crispy and so juicy!

Both the nasi lemak costed more than RM 10 ( I can't remember the exact figure) which is a bit pricey for the portion. The drawback of the place is definitely the atmosphere. Now, i'm not trying to say that i expect it to be like a 5-star hotel. But something there just don't seem quite right for me.

Asian Recipes

I've been meaning to blog a lot earlier but since the wireless in my room has been down, i could not do so. Plus, it's the mid sem break next week so there's tons of assignments due this week and i'm actually skipping my class just to blog in the library. :)

Ok, back to my post. Asian Recipes is located at Premier 101, it's right at the end so drive slowly towards the end if you're not sure of the place.

I like the classy interior of the place. The leather chair and dark-wood table. It's a good sight because places that served Asian food are usually of cheap architecture.

There is one thing that i really like about this place. The cutlery, plates and bowls used differs a lot from other restaurants in town.

Asian Recipes Special Fried Mee RM 6.90

This is recommended by the house and also by the waitress. I didn't wanna order it coz i never believe in recommendations ( most of the time they turn out terible ;p ) but my dining companion insisted it. The verdict - It was rather sweet and there's this heavy prawn taste that i didn't like.
Assam Laksa RM 7.00

It tasted really good and i really liked it. It's a must try if you're going to dine here. Not to mention they serve you in a unique shape bowl. ( not pictured here coz i was too excited to eat ;p )

It also came with obligatory prawn paste.

Kerabu Papaya RM 3.50

This one tasted good too although there's more of other ingredients rather than the mango itself. If you notice properly, the chef used the correct way to cut the long beans. It's not sliced or cut using knife. So, thumbs up for that!

Mango sticky rice RM 5.00

We (not telling you who i went with =D) had this for desert. I had never been to Thailand so i would say this taste pretty good. The portion is quite big so have it shared if you're not a big-eater.

Three Layer Tea RM 3.00

It was alright and nothing to write home about but i must give them props for the very clean glasses!
Buah Kedondong Juice RM 3.00

It was really sour but the juice was really "authentic"- minimal water mixed.

I had actually thought the food would be damn expensive with the classy interior and all, but it was alright, i would say it's cheap and YES, definitely recommended. :)

** I just got a sms saying my lecturer gave quiz in the class! damn! and gawd, IE is a pain in the arse!!

Malaysian Breakfast

As much as i loved to have ham and bacon for my breakfast, the Malaysian breakfast is always good once in a while. Nasi Lemak is my all time favourite breakfast.

I was in Cheras (i don't know the exact place, sorry!) recently and my sister brought me to this coffee shop for breakfast.

Nasi Lemak

I would always choose telur mata kerbau over hard boil egg to go with nasi lemak. The sambal was nice but it had too much anchovies. Rice was perfect ;p

Sambal sotong

This one is really delicious! omg, i'm drooling at this picture man ! ;p

Limau Ais

It's good to wash down the fats of coconut milk with something sour.

Teh Ais

... or go along with the common drink of every Malaysians.

Milo Panas

...or the popular Milo ;p

Have a nice and syiok day readers!

How to make Kaya

Kaya is like jam for us, Malaysians and yours truly is a big fan of kaya.

I don't like those over-commercialised ones like the ones from Gardenia or High Five coz they tend to be too sweet. The ones sold in our local bakery are usually good enough to satisfy my tastebuds but recently, the price of everything seems to go up and the quality isn't that good anymore.

So, Chef Mel decided to make her own kaya! Armed with a cook book that was older than me! :P

First!

You need sugar. About 300g - You can add more if you're a sweet tooth or lose some if you're diabetic.

and,
5 Eggs, 4 pandan leaves and about 1 biji of coconut.

Beat sugar and egg till they mixed well.

After that, pour in the coconut milk till it mix well.

Then sift it so that your kaya won't be so kasar.

Put on double boil, and constantly stirring it for the first 15 minutes.

Then leave it without stirring at very low heat for about 4 hours.

Ta-da! Kaya!

The whole process was so easy although it's a bit time consuming! I'm making some more tomorrow ! yay!
