Donald and Lily Melaka

wow, it's been a while since I last blogged and it's one luxury that I really, really miss.

Anyway, just last week I drove to Melaka with Huai Bin for a food trip!

The highlight of the trip for me was this place called Donald and Lily's. Huai Bin actually found the place while surfing for food while I was driving and wanted to go that night itself but it was a little late when we arrived. (Thinking back, I think we should have gone and try the ayam ponteh instead of the easily forgettable McQuek's satay celup).

I had a really good feeling the moment I enter the place. The whole place looks entirely like a home and it feels like dining at a friend's place. Whenever I enter a place that gives me this homey feeling, i'm almost 100% sure that a great spread of food is about to be served.

I wasn't wrong. The chendol we had was spectacular. I don't know if they had made the gula melaka themselves but it tasted like no other that Ive tasted. It was so good that Huai Bin had two bowls of it. Man, I wouldn't mind to pay RM 10 for this bowl of goodness if it's available in KL.

I don't think they have a specific menu though. The food options changes by days and the waiter would actually tell you what they have on that day. I love the hospitality though. The auntie who served us is really friendly.

I went for the mee siam. My mum made really good mee siam and she has set the bar so high that no where else could compare to the one she made. I didn't like that the sauce that came along was a little sweet. The fried beehoon too taste very mild. You can skip on this.

The curry laksa that Huai Bin had was nice though and he loved it. It was not too milky to the point that you'll feel "muak" just half way finishing that bowl of laksa but just thick enough to give the rich feeling.

I also ordered Tofu Rojak to share (but I ate most of it. Huai Bin doesn't eat much! T.T) . I don't actually eat tofu but since the lady recommended it and I wanted a side dish, I went for it. The rojak is a platter of fish cake, cucumber and pineapples served with rojak paste and homemade chili sauce. I don't know if it's a "Melaka thing" but the paste is really different, very distintive in taste a lot stronger on the prawn flavor. It goes really well with the fish cake. The only thing I didn't like about the rojak was the fact that the cucumber and pineapples is cubed.

I've always love how people Melaka (maybe cause I'm just a kampung girl at heart) is so laid back and you hardly see people rushing. Can't wait for my next trip to Melaka again sometime soon and yes, looking forward for that damn awesome chendol here again!

Melaka Sentral

I'm doing some quick update here before boarding my flight in 30 minutes. This is a backdated post tho'. ;p

Before I left Malacca, me and my friends decided to have our dinner since the journey back will take two hours.

It's a Malay operated restaurant and I must say it's a rare sight.

I never expected the chili to be good but it turn out super good and i had so much of it.

The rice balls was however disappointing. It was hard and taste nothing like chicken rice. The chicken was however the opposite. It was well flavoured and nice.

Both the drinks were alright. Nothing to rave about. ;p

Soya Bean

Ice tea

It's final call now for my flight. I better go! :P

Jonker Walk Desert

I didn't knew this place was popular since my trip to Malacca was quite impromptu so i didn't have the time to surf for good eateries in Malacca.

I just went in since there were a lot of people so i assume something must be good. Talking about bandwagon fallacy! But i was surfing the net for some good food a few weeks ago and found this place is actually one of the tourist spot in Malacca.

The architecture of the place is very much designated like the coffee shops in the past. The front side sells some local products and the back is an open space.

Me and my friends were still full when we were here so we didn't ate much. We had :

Seafood Mee RM 3.00

Seafood was fresh and the portion was right. The soup was very flavourful too!

Goreng Goreng RM 3.50

Trust me the portion is at least three times more than it looks in the picture. Very cheap i would say and serve well as a snack during tea time.I wish the sauce was spicy tho!

Durian Chendol RM 3.00

They are popular for their chendol and i must say it is really very good. The gula melaka is thick and really different from other shop. Plus, to have it along with a bit of durian flavour was really interesting. However if you're not a fan of durian you can opt for the normal chendol.

If you go Malacca make sure you drop by at this place ok! Best! :P

Chendol Menara Jam

As the name suggested, it is located opposite the famous Menara Jam in Christ Church, Malacca.

This is actually the first thing i ate in Malacca! Because me and my friends were kinda exhausted after the bus ride ( trust me, we went through a lot just to get on the bus!), we walked opposite to quench our thirst and hunger the moment we reach Christ Church.

The famous Chendol Menara Jam stall!

I can't remember how much the chendol cost but it should be below RM 1.50.

Taste wise, i would say, it's nothing to shout. Below average :P

There's also a stall next to it that sells fried banana fritters and cempedak.

The banana fritters is really long ! I don't know why but it looks wrong to be putting a long banana fritters in your mouth. It doesn't look right. :p

So, if you're coming to Malacca for a visit, take my advice, skip on this. "Save your stomach" for something else!

Melaka Chicken Rice Balls

This is actually a virgin visit to Malacca for me and my friends. The moment, we arrived at Christ Church we knew our first destination was to eat Chicken Rice balls.

We went to the most popular one. it's pretty easy to spot because it is located at the beginning of Jonker Walk.

We had to queue a while since there's no seat.

I like the marble tables. Give me the once-upon-a-time feeling. Hehe.

I had high expectation since people has been saying how good it is.

The chili was nothing to shout. I wish it was better since the blended chili make a big part in a good chicken rice.

I waited for 20 minutes and finally my chicken rice balls came. Each of us had lima biji. Kinda small servings actually.

The right method to eat it is to dunk the balls in the chili first and then eat it with the chicken. The rice has got this special texture that it's hard to explain. But, it's good.

The plate of chicken for three person.

Again, very small servings. Barely to fill you if you're hungry. The chicken was quite tasteless. Disappointed.

If you haven't tried the chicken rice balls , this is the place for the authentic one. But if you ask me to wait more than 30 minutes for it, i won't. Coz i don't think it's worth it. Not to mention , all this actually costed me RM 21.50!
