Maxim Dim Sum Restaurant : Best Penang Dim Sum

Sorry for I haven't been updating regularly. I'm pretty much swamped with assignments and exams for the past one week. For those who have been visiting , only to be disappointed with a stale old post, I'm really sorry! To thank the loyal readers (*cough*) , I am writing the longest post ever!

Let's get to the point and feast with the photos, shall we?

While I am always in the group that beg to differ that Penang has better food than Kuching, I'll have to give in to Penang when it comes to a place for good dim sum. I hate to say this but Kuching has a long way to go when it comes to serving dim sum. ;p Anyway, this particular dim sum place is located in Lebuh Pekaka and is in the vicinity of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

On weekdays, they actually have this little metal push cart filled with dim sum where they go around the tables and you just take what ever that catch your eyes. However, because it is usually packed to the brim during weekends (and public holidays), it is self service.

Chinese tea is customary when it comes to eating dim sum. They have a list of chinese tea but unfortunately orderings are taken in mandarin. Me and my friends don't actually know any chinese tea name in mandarin (I know oolong but they don't have this) but since they heard their friends ordering "Xiang Pien" before, so that's what we did also - in every single visit. Lol.

I have to admit one of the reason I fell in love with this place is the excellent egg tarts. The lardy crispy puff pastry complemented the perfect egg custard so well that the first bite is sure to send you to heaven! (just incase you don't know, the puff pastry used in dim sum egg tarts is mixed with lard) This is easily the best egg tart i've ever eaten.

Not many places can whip up a good taro croquette. More than often , they are either too dry, too soggy or they fail terribly in making the pastry. Maxim on the other hand, make perfect one. It is something you don't wanna miss if you're here.

The wo tie was however a dissapointment. It was bland and too dry for my liking.

Even though the raddish cake appear to be more starchy than usual, it is delectable and does have a taste of its own.

The porridge seems to be a hit there but I didn't try. My friend said it was very good though.

Braised chicken feet is one of the few "must-haves" in my dim sum list. While I have it in every of my visit here, the one here is just satisfactory.

I am not exactly a fan of siu mai's (the Kuching version is a gazillion times better!) and the one they have here is not good enough to transform me into a fan of siu mai either.

I don't know what is the exact word for this, but this is delicious. It's basically two very fresh prawns wrapped in thin wantan-like skin and then deep fried. The orgasm comes from the little plate of home made mayonaise.

There's this saying that says "Do not expect so much or you will be dissapointed." This definitely apply to the fish balls here. When I took it from the cart, I was expecting it to be nice bouncy tasty fish balls only to be dissapoint with strong chinese herbs infused fish balls.

The har gau and har gau-like above is just palatable . Not very much into har gaus, but I do like the har gau skin here. It's thin yet not too thin.

This is some deep fried fish balls wrapped in mee-like skin. Nothing spectacular. You can pass this. ;p

Unlike many other dim sum place that served pork ribs in sweet braised dark sauce, the one here is cooked in fermented black beans and lots of garlic. I had it on my first visit and again in every of my visit thereafter.

Just beside Maxim is a place where they sale soya bean and soya bean related products that has this really good almond soya bean jelly. It has the jelly texture but I don't know what God-send ingredients they add in it because it literally melts in your mouth. Damn good!

Ahh! Took me almost three hours to write this and have the pictures uploaded. Hope you guys enjoyed the post though!

It's Friday again.Have a nice weekend everyone! Remember to play safe alright. :)

**P/s: I don't know why there's a huge empty space below. Tried publishing it a few times and it's still the same. :(

Wong Kok Kitchen

If there is one thing I would complaint about Queensbay Mall, Penang, It would be the lack of eateries in the mall. So, whenever I'm there, I never exactly had the problem on deciding where to eat.

Wong Kok Kitchen is another version of Kim Gary-like restaurant. I had thought that it is a franchise of Wong Kok Char Chan Teng but after going through the menu, I found out it isn't.

They have a varieties of pastries for you to choose and it is available the whole day. I find these pastries a good appetizer.

Yam Puff

This one is not commendable and it tasted way below average.

Egg Tarts

The puff pastry was almost perfect. They served it hot and I find the combination of hot creamy custard egg with the layers of crispy flaky pastry heavenly. Must order.
.
Po Lo Pau

This dish is the most remarkable from this restaurant. The pineapple pastry on top goes really well with the thick-generous knob of butter. Sinful but very, very good.

Macau Pork Burger

Me, being me would never miss any chances to order a pork dish. However I find the pork chop too small - about the size of half the bun. Also I was quite turn off by the foul pork smell.

Black Pepper Seafood Rice

This is Jessica's dish. I didn't try but she said it was alright. I didn't find it appealing though.

Milk Tea

The tea is priced at RM3.80 per glass. Pretty hefty I would say, especially when half the glass is filled of ice. But I can assure you, this is the best milk tea I've ever had.

While the food is easily passed on, I would say it's worth it to visit the place for the great pastries.

Wong Kok Char Chan Teng

Peninsular seems to have a lot of restaurants serving food popular for the Hong Kees.I've read a few positive reviews online on this place and decided to try out with my sister.

The interior is designed in a way to give you a feeling that you're in Hong Kong.

Those who watched the Cantonese series would recognized the ambassador for this restaurant.

Seriously, i don't get it when people use tv stars as ambassador for a restaurant. Maybe get a popular Celebrity Chef would be more appropriate.

Nissin Noodles RM 7.50

The soup is very well flavoured but i thought it was a tad over-priced.

Luncheon Man Tou Sandwich RM 6.90

I cant remember the exact name. I was quite sceptical at first because the man tou has a bit of chocolate hint and i doubt that it will go well with the luncheon meat. Surprisingly though, it tasted good and filling.

Milk Tea RM 3.50

Ordering milk tea is kinda like an obligatory thing to do when you dine in restaurants like this. Their milk tea is good but not superb :P

I would choose this over Kim Gary's. Definitely!

Food and Tea Hong Kong ( The Spring )

After meeting Dr. Sheikh (the Malaysian angkasawan), i brought Jess to this place for her birthday dinner.

This place has quite a number of franchises in KL. I don't think it's popular tho ;p

I like the architecture! Modern and simple.

They gave me a good impression the 1st minute i stepped in. But the next minute I was so turn off when i saw the waiter was yawning while serving. There was a number of waiters but they took so long to get our orders even after me waving!

We had :

Stir Fried Nissin Noodles with Beef RM 7.90

It was very oily and i doubt they really use Nissin noodles.

Buttered Chicken Diced with Rice RM 8.20

Jess said, " The rice is really hard and it tasted more like mushroom soup." Plus, the chicken is not diced, and the rice was really hard!

BB grass jelly RM 2.80

Jess' , didn't try ;p

Tea in Hong Kong style with Grass Jelly RM 3.50

It was alright.

The food is definitely overpriced for the portion and taste.

Not recommended!

Dragon-I

So, i went to this Ah Beng club and have some beer with my sister . Heh. Jk lah!

I was at The Curve's food junction and didn't know what to eat coz there were too much choice. I finally settled down here for their Chinese food.

This place is popular for their La mien. The chef will do it "live" for the patrons. They first started out at Cititel Mid Valley's Lobby and expanded like mushrooms in the peninsular.

I like how you can dine in a nice atmosphere yet you pay for reasonable price. The restaurant was empty cause i was there early. You don't get to see this during the peak hours.

You can also opt for seats with a tad of privacy, which i did.

and if there's anything, you need not need shout for the waiters .. just press this thing. Very efficient. Be sure to press at least once. They charge 10 % for service tax ;p

They also have this Dried Prawns chilli sambal on the table to go along with your food. Very nice.

I had :

La Mien in Hot and Sour soup RM 12.00

They have three kinds of La mien ( as in how they are cut ) and i chose this one. It's a bit like pan mien actually. It's named La mien coz they "pull" the dough while making the mee.

Fried Carrot Cake RM 12.00

This has got to be the best carrot cake ever. Crunchy on the outside, and soft on the inside. Very well fried. Nice.

Xiau Long Dumpling RM 9.00

Xiau Long dumplings is also their signature dish. The skin is elastically thin yet enough to hold the soup. Very good.

Egg Yolk Bun RM 6.00

I didn't like the dough coz i thought it was too sticky. The filling was too yolk-y which makes me kinda giddy after eating it.

Winter Melon RM 5.00

Refreshing for a hot sunny day but too lil for the price.

Cold Chinese Tea RM 2.00

The Chinese tea was ok. Nothing to rave.

The restaurant claim they don't use MSG to cook but me and my sis was really thirsty the whole day after the meal. Hmmmm.. so what say you ?

Anyhoo, I'll give the restaurant a rate of 8 / 10 ;p
