Nasi Kandar Pelita, Penang

It's true when they say Penang spoil your taste buds. Anything you've tasted in Penang, you just won't find the same food tasting as good as it had in Penang. This especially applies for Nasi Kandar. I didn't actually visited much Nasi Kandar joints in Penang but just this particular one nearby where I used to stay in Penang is enough to make me think the ones in anywhere else is a joke. :P

For the uninformed, Nasi Kandar is very much like nasi campur except they consist of mainly curries. I love curries so this was actually one of my loyal dinner when I was still in Penang.

On top of the curries, most joints also usually have beef soup - from all parts of the cow to choose. They're usually ordered by men as it is believed to "make men stronger." I do think it's true in a way as it is really heaty but whether or not it makes your bed sessions better is something I cannot justify. I also don't know if it works on women and the few times I had it, I was alone. Plus, I don't have any bed sessions experience. *cough!cough!* :p

And of course, you have the roti-s. I am not a fan of any of the flat pastry though. Always felt like they're made too oily for consumption. :p

This is my usual plate of Nasi Kandar. One piece of ayam madu and one vege (usually go for the spinach), on top of a bed of rice with kuah pedas. Just typing this has got me salivating!

I also really enjoyed the tandoori chicken. Now, the picture doesn't really do much justice to the taste but I can assure you it's very good, juicy, well spiced and tasty! It's eaten with some lime juice and you would be surprise how the tangy lime could go so well with the slightly charred tandoori chicken! The naan was however just mediocre.

Funny how food like this only goes well with teh ais or teh O ais. :P I usually go for teh ais though.

On an unrelated note, my long time boyfriend - Lenovo is infected with spyware again. Our relationship has been on the rocks of late. T.T This entry is posted from an Acer - I couldn't wait as I was really excited to blog about this after coming across a number of "funny looking" Nasi Kandar in Klang Valley. :P

P/s : Lenovo is back and I am RM85 poorer!

Oh and and ... today's the father bear's birthday.

Happy Birthday, Dy. :)

Kuih Bulan

*updated!

This year marks the fourth year of me celebrating the 15th day of the 8th month in the Chinese calendar away from my parents. It's not that we actually have huge celebration back home but it's just nice to be home with your family during festivals like this.

I always make it a point to get myself a moon cake even though I don't really favor the taste of this sweet pastry. Somehow I always believe it was eaten for prosperity. Lol!

Legend has it that, moon cake was actually a way the Yuan (some say Ming?) Dynasty passed the messages around without letting the Mongolians know. The message is slipped in the moon cake! Not too shabby for a wedding proposal also eh! :P

Anyway, happy moon cake festival everyone!

****

I celebrated my Mid Autumn festival the truly 1Malaysia way. Lol

Had awesome Nasi Kandar with kuah campur for dinner (instead of you know.. stir fry pork?lol)! Huge piece of chicken! =D

And since it's Pink Day, i head over with my friend to Baskin Robbins for awesome Brownie Ala Mode (Chocolate Fudge with two scoops of ice cream topped with caramel, M&Ms, whipped cream and cherry!) Just look at the caramel. It was sex!! :D

Finally, a picture of the full moon I took on the way back to my apartment.

Hope you guys had a great night. I certainly did!

Nasi Kandar

I was reading The Economist a couple of days ago and I came across this article about beers. Can't remember exactly everything the writer penned, but one thing i find interesting was that he mentioned one of the greatest beer pairings is with Curry!

So, after work yesterday the first thing i did was to get a pint of beer, chilled it for tonight! And today after work, I went to Nasi Kandar Pelita. I clocked out at 8 p.m, only reached my place at 9.30 p.m so there wasn't much choice for me to choose.

The verdict : Perhaps I have a conservative taste bud but I still think teh tarik goes best with curry. Beer is a little too strong and it over whelmed the taste of curry.

p/s : this plate of Nasi Kandar costed me RM 9.20! Jesus Christ, can someone explain to me why Nasi Kandar is so expensive?

p/s* : I'm off tomorrow!!!! :D

Deepavali : Original Indian Cookies

This post is dedicated to David, who requested me to write about food on Deepavali. I'm sorry it's a little late.

This is actually my first time tasting original Indian cookies. My Indian friend was kind enough to bring me back some cookies from her hometown ;p

A must during the festival itself. My mother made good muruku but it's of improvised version where it's crispy and not hard. The Indians love it hard tho. ( This sentence sounds wrong. Lol)

This is the Indian version of bola salji or better known as kueh mo-mo. It is made of pounded green beans and ghee and then moulded into bite-size balls. It melts in the mouth and this is my favourite.

I thought this one looks quite cute. it's actually made to imitate the green apple but it tasted nothing like the green apple. The "black stick" is actually one of the spice you put into the curry. (I'm not very good with the names of traditional spices) The cookie is to be eaten whole - together with the spice in order to get the full taste.

A normal cookie but it has strong milk powder taste and ghee.

The Kueh Ros was however a tad dissapointing. It's tasteless. I'm not so sure if it's suppose to taste like this but i like the Chinese version of Kueh Ros.

The strong ghee taste in the cookie totally outshine the taste of the strawberry jam. So it tasted more like butter cookie rather than strawberry jam cookie.

I notice all the cookies has at least a taste of spice in it and they usually substitute butter with ghee. However, I'm not quite used to cookies tasting like cumin seeds or bunga cengkih.

It was nevertheless a good experience for me since I have never tasted the authentic Indian cookies. ;p

Daun Kari

Located at 3rd Exchange ( Behind The banquet) , they're serving Indian cuisine. Very pack during peak hours.

The interior is like normal coffee shop. But it is clean. Ok, maybe still new.

The making of roti! Taken wit my camera phone =D

Nasi Briyani RM 8.90

Pui Wen was raving this bryani to me so i had high expectation on it. It taste ok , but there's just no "oomph!" in it. The spices is not right and i ordered the mutton one ..and the mutton smell was a tad too strong. By the way, the chicken version is cheaper by RM 2.

Roti Canai RM 1.00

The roti canai is good. The dhal that comes along with it is really good too! They don't have roti-s at 10.30am-2.30 pm.

Roti Canai Banana RM 1.60

I tried this out of curiousity. Very surprised it is GOOD! There's this special "chemistry" between the banana flavour and the dhal that you eat along with. hehe.

The dhal that comes along with the roti canai.

Teh tarik Ais RM 1.70

It is super dilluted. Don't order. Hrmph!

Oh yeah, Stef , you guys order 5 papadums , they din charge it in! I should have ordered more!

The roti canai is worth to try! Go there ya! It is also manage by an ex schoolmate of mine! Greenians rocks!!!!

Ammah Curry House

*** Photos are taken with SE K610i

Today i had lunch with my usual friends again at Ammah Curry House. Initially we wanted to eat at Jade Pot Tea House, BUT! it was full and most tables were booked. Na bey, this kind of restaurant also so many people go. wait till i open one! haha!

So , back to the curry house. It's located infront of UNIMAS Medic Faculty. When i arrive there, I was feeling quite awkward there coz the waiters has this restless face. Not one waiter are like that.. but all! When you order .. he's like not answering you and then just walk away. Some more they tooK quite a long time to light the fire to prepare the food. (canai and thosai). The ambience was dull accompanied by some jiwang Malay songs.

Ok .. what we ate?

Thosai Masala

3 of us ordered this. Thosai Masala means there is potatoes inside the thosai. This one actually had more onions than the potatoes and it had aubergine in it... which i HATE! But Thank God , it was spicy enough. So i finish it... I just didn't like the watery curry gravy and samba. Sri Shan win hands down!

Roti Canai Kosong

Samson's one.. looKs ok. But I don't quite like roti canai.. didn't bother to taste :P The gravy oso same la.

Roti Telur

My girlfriend (HMMMMM...haha) one . Looks ok also. I didnt' try.She didn't complaint oso. Haha

Nasi Beriani Ayam

Four of us shared this. There were five of us but Sucker Jo didn't wanna share. Haha. The chicken is THE BOMB , can?! It was sooo nice. The beriani rice was Ok. The good thing was they used basmathi rice . Comes with Samba , some weird sweet stuff and pickled onions. and of course papadum! The chicken isssss GOOOOOD!!

Teh C peng special

Looks nice hor?? It is nice :) The 1st layer is tea , 2nd is milk and 3rd is wheatgrass. Nice.

Teh Tarik Ais

I love the fact that it came in this stainless steel glass. Very Indian-ish. hehe.

Ice Lemon Tea

This is the worst drink of all..SO bitter lah!

So that was my lunch.. with them .It was good.. very Indian-ish.. with the stainless steel plates and all. hehe. Can go there cuba-cuba lah!

Continued my afternoon at Somerset for chatting session. HAD LOTS of fun with Sucker Jo! HAHA!

Sri Shan Curry House

*** The photos are taken with SE K610i (quite blur =[ )

Sri Shan is located near the Point One in town ,next to Tsui Hua Lau's building. Usually packed in the peak hour, Sri Shan serves Indian food and has got quite a lot of good reviews. Many would claim the food is spicy , but honestly , i think the spicy level is just MILD. man ... wish they could double it up!

What i had?

Nasi briyani Kosong RM 3

I must say their nasi briyani is one of the best i've tasted. They put the perfect amount of ghee so it kinda makes the briyani has this damn good aroma. Not many would put a lot of ghee since it's quite costly. It's cooked with golden raisins, tomato , spices and cashew nuts. The briyani comes with a piece of papadum (the piece of keropok) and pineapple and cucumber pickles. It's good.

Ratings : 10/10

Ayam Paratal RM 5

This one taste good but the gravy is a bit too thick for my liking. And the meat is soo small man! They'll give you LOTS of gravy and Lil chix onli!! OH And! I wish it's spicy!
Ratings : 8/10

Sotong Varuval RM 5

Varuval is suppose to be very spicy.. But sighhhh, this one not spicy! Squid's over-cooked till it's so dry and rubberish. Not very nice, don't order this one! He he!

Ratings : 5/10

Potato RM 1.50

This one is nice. My dining companion seems to love it a lot! ( **GRIN** ) Again , i wish it's spicy!! Ratings : 9/10

Thosai Kosong RM 1.80

This one is nice. Good thosai are actually not suppose to be too sour. This one is sour but it's nice? Comes with grated coconut fry with chilli and other spices, dhal and curry gravy. Finally! Something is spicy. The grated coconut is nice! I think it's quite cheap oso :P Ratings : 10/10

So , if you're kuching-aiks and do not know where to give in to your-indian-food-cravings, this is the place! =)

Oh , this is another free lunch! Who says there is no free lunch is this world? :P
